7 reasons we need more women in engineering

As a brand, the biggest driving force for us, when it comes to changing the world of recruitment, is diversity. One of our core values is empowerment. Empowerment of women and people from diverse backgrounds is something we aim to put at the core of all we do. Helping to place successful women in leadership roles is something we always try to do, also. A big part of this comes from the fact that our whole brand was built and is run by incredibly inspiring women. As part of upholding our core beliefs and values, we want to keep pushing the boundaries of our recruitment strategies and challenging both companies and industries to expand their workforce into diverse markets. Engineering is one of the four pillars of our company, and we wanted to hopefully inspire some engineering businesses out there to look at hiring women into their teams.

Engineering institutions all over the world are encouraging more young people to join the industry. As part of this, there are numerous ongoing campaigns and initiatives taking place worldwide to dispel the myths that surround the profession to try and open the opportunities to both young men and women.

These are the reasons why we need more women in engineering. Each of these factors will help contribute to a better future for one and all. We need more women in engineering because we will have more exciting projects, discoveries and inventions.

Variety at work

The best part about having women in the workplace is that it brings diversity to the team, which can mean a better product or service. In fact, studies have shown that companies with gender-diverse boards have delivered higher returns on equity and produced stronger risk management than their peers. Different perspectives are critical to business success because they help your company identify new opportunities and avoid pitfalls.

Bring fresh ideas, new insights, diverse viewpoints and balance to the engineering industry as a whole

While the engineering industry is making progress in addressing the gender imbalance, it still has a long way to go. A diverse and inclusive workplace brings fresh ideas and insights, new perspectives and viewpoints and overall balance to an organization. Here's why:

  • Women bring a different perspective than men do to the development of products, services or processes. They may have different needs or concerns than men do when using these products or services.

  • Women bring a different viewpoint about how women can use those same products or services — for example, caring for children while working at home as well as working outside of the home could lead to better designs for baby-friendly workplaces that don't require mothers (or fathers) to stay away from their children all day every day if they want them to thrive physically, emotionally and socially while growing up.

  • Having more women in engineering roles encourages other female students who are considering studying engineering fields at university level because they see someone like themselves succeeding at such high levels within this field which gives them confidence that they too will be able to achieve similar success if they dedicate themselves fully towards achieving their goals by putting in all required effort needed."

Support and mentor other female engineers

As a female engineer, you're in a unique position to help and mentor other women in engineering. You can support them, help them succeed and get their ideas heard.

The best way to do this is to be an active advocate for other female engineers. Being an advocate means that you are willing to show up and speak on behalf of something that you believe in even when it's not the most popular opinion at the time. It requires some courage, but the rewards are worth it!

You can help other women by being supportive of their ideas and helping them get those ideas implemented if they don't have enough influence themselves—not just by offering advice but also by taking action as needed (for example volunteering for projects).

To ensure that society benefits from the expertise of women in all areas of engineering

Diversity is good for business. We all know this and we’ve been hearing it since the 1960s, but it remains true today. A diverse workforce brings new ideas to the table, and this can be especially useful in engineering, where we are constantly thinking about how to improve our products and innovate in new ways.

Diversity of thought leads to better products because it ensures that everyone who contributes to creating a product is able to bring their own expertise. When experts from different fields work together, they each contribute something unique: one employee may have expertise in economics or law; another may be an expert in marketing or public relations; still, another may be an engineer or designer by trade. The result? A product made up of many different perspectives that can reach a wider audience—and ultimately better serve our society as a whole!

Diverse representation gives you a competitive advantage

Many people believe that diverse teams are more creative, productive, innovative and successful. Teams with different backgrounds and experiences think differently than homogeneous groups—they ask different questions and come up with different solutions.

Do you want to be an entrepreneur? Do you want to start a company that will become a household name? If so, your chances are much better if there's at least one woman on your founding team.

Inspire future generations of female engineers

Encourage girls to consider engineering as a career. We need more women in engineering! Who better to encourage young women than successful female engineers themselves? They can be role models for girls and show them that it's possible for them to follow their dreams of becoming an engineer too.

If you know any girls who are interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), encourage them to pursue their interest by telling stories about the accomplishments of past female engineers like Marie Curie or Grace Hopper. This will help them see the possibilities available to them if they choose this field as a career path.
